Book mountain

I’ve just tidied up the books on my to-read bookcase (which overflows on to a second bookcase). I have 229 books to read. At a very generous two books per week that’s going to take me over four years to get through, if I don’t buy another book until it’s done.

This morning I was killing time in Waterstone’s and came out with a long list of books I want to read. There seems to be so much new fantasy out that looks really good, and of course there are the many classics I haven’t read yet. Perhaps I just need to accept that I’m going to be climbing this mountain for a many, many years. Perhaps I should look into additional shelving.

I Write Like

I Write Like is an hilarious widget which analyzes your writing and gives you a comparison to a famous author. I tried it a few times and my results were:

  • paragraphs from a business email – H.P. Lovecraft. I may have to think about how I’m writing to my colleagues!
  • paragraphs from the brand new opening scene of my work in progress (which I think is pretty good) – Dan Brown. Mixed feelings about this. On the one hand he sells loads, so yay. On the other, lots of people think he’s not that good, but I haven’t read so can’t comment. On balance, I think I’ll take it as a compliment.
  • paragraphs from the first draft of a fantasy short story I wrote a couple of months ago – James Fenimore Cooper. Well, I loved Last of the Mohicans.

Very amusing. What do you get?

Absence

Phew, it’s been a while. Partly it’s because I’ve been travelling and partly it’s because I’m sick.

The travel is a short term thing. I went to Athens on holiday. That was lovely. I really liked Athens and the Acropolis was amazing. Then I ended up in Abu Dhabi because of erupting volcanos.

The sick is more of a long term thing. I get very tired and I only have energy for a limited amount of things. Sometimes I prioritise blog writing and sometimes I don’t. Lately I haven’t been. I would really like that to be different, but I don’t know how realistic that hope is.

What was your favourite book as a teenager?

Inspired by Nathan Bransford, who asked the question on his blog. He gets hundreds of comments though and I didn’t feel like getting lost in the cloud.

My favourites were:
Wuthering Heights by Charlotte Bronte
The Dragonlance Chronicles by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis
Jerusalem Fire by R M Meluch

I wonder if it’s time for a re-read to see if they’re as good as I remember, or if that would spoil the memories. I did read Wuthering Heights again not so long ago; it was as good as I remembered and I appreciated it more, so maybe it’s the way to go.

What about you? What were you favourite books as a teenager? And have you read them again as a grown up?

Writing goals for 2010

Finish Sacrifice! Yep, that’s basically it for this year. I want to get Sacrifice into a suitable state for sending to agents and I want to do that by the end of August.

I’m going to aim for 2000 words a week and that should get me to 75000 words by the end of March, which I think is about right for this novel. That then gives me about four months to finish the editing. Given that the 40000 words I already have been edited a bit, I think four months is a challenging but achievable goal.

I’ve got a calendar of inspirational quotes for the year and I’ll share the ones that I like the most. Today’s was from Dara Torres, a US olympic swimmer:

“You don’t have to put an age limit on your dreams.”

Happy anniversary to me

It’s been just over a year since I started writing this blog so I thought it might be appropriate to do a little reflection.

When I started my intentions were several.
1. To have a regular writing practice which would provide some much needed discipline and get me in a writing mood.
2. To create an online presence so that when I finished and sold my novel I would have a platform to start from.
3. To talk about writing. To discuss both the technicalities and the experience of writing and thus stimulate and record my learning.

So, how did it work out?

1. Well, I didn’t make a daily practice out this blog and there have been a few occasions this year when even a weekly post seemed like a stretch goal. It hasn’t really provided me with the discipline that I thought it would and has often been a displacement activity when I could have been writing stories. It has been a nagging reminder that I want to write, that I need to write, and that when life gets in the way there’s always time to spend ten minutes writing.

2. This went a little better. It was a toe dipped in the waters of social media and now I find myself hooked. It’s helped me be a little more open about who I am rather than hiding behind a professional persona and it’s helped me connect all the different parts of me. Now, I have an online presence. It’s smaller than perhaps I originally envisaged but I’m comfortable with it. And, of course, I haven’t actually finished my novel, much less sold it, so there’s still plenty of time.

3. I think this is where writing this blog has really helped. Over the year I’ve used it to record places and things of use to writers, to review the stories I’ve read and talk about the experiences I’ve had related to writing. My posts have been getting longer and more personal and I think that’s because after all this practice I’m finding it easier. It’s given me an opportunity to organise my thoughts about writing, to really explore them, and I feel that I’ve learnt a lot this year.

So, onwards to 2010. My writing goals for this year are to finish my novel, Sacrifice, and to keep posting about my experiences. What about you? What are you working on for 2010?

I might have a vampire fetish…

I like horror in general and I like vampire stuff, but no more than any other creature of the night. But now I’m not so sure.

My favourite thing in the world is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but that doesn’t automatically translate to a vampire fetish. Not on it’s own. I like Ann Rice and Dracula but I can do without cheesy vampire b movies.

Then along comes True Blood and I think I might be developing a little obsession. Three episodes in and I can’t wait for the next one. The anticipation is too much to handle so I order book 1 of the Charlaine Harris novels the series is based on.

Which leads me down an analytical path because the series is so much better than the book. There’s a lot of learning there which I’m working into a forthcoming post. And while I’m in a reflective, analytical mood it occurs to me that I might have a vampire fetish. More to ponder…

Hello, my life, how I’ve missed you

I have a job! Yes, that’s right, job hunting is over and my life can resume.

It’s amazing how much time looking for a job takes. I don’t think I’m cut out for short term contract work. I’m looking forward for a couple of years of stability in a permanent job with regular hours. Yay. Plus, I’ll have an hour’s commute each way so I’m really looking forward to cracking through the two bookcases of un-read books in my study. Then there’s the piles of short stories. Can’t wait!

New layout

The eagle-eyed among you will notice that I’ve changed the template for my blog. Being coding challenged means I am limited to the free sample templates provided by Blogger. If only I had the skills to design myself the perfect format…

What I was really after was a three column template because I have lots of widgets on the side and some of them are below the fold. According to the webbie guys at work, this is BAD. But there is no three column template. Hopefully this one is easier on the eyes.

Bookwormr

I discovered the most fun thing the other day. Well, alright, not the most fun thing, but it is pretty entertaining.

Bookwormr is social media for people who like to read. You create lists of books that you have read, are reading, or want to read. For those you’ve read you can rate them and write synopses or reviews. As it’s social media you can link to all your friends. My user name is BoudicaM and it currently says ‘BoudicaM has no friends’. Tragic, yet hilarious.

Apparently it can be linked to one’s Facebook profile, but I haven’t managed to figure that out yet.
